Bill Belichick had interest in Jets HC job before landing at North Carolina in football stunner

Bill Belichick might have taken the North Carolina head coaching job, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have an interest in other gigs.

And the longtime Patriots coach looked into one spot that’s a true stunner.

Belichick reached out to the Jets about their soon-to-be-open coaching job in the weeks leading up to his UNC decision, The Post’s Brian Costello confirmed.

The Athletic first reported the news.

Belichick, an assistant coach and defensive coordinator for the Jets from 1997-99, was named as Bill Parcells’ head coaching successor in January 2000 but stepped down one day into the job with the now-infamous “I resign of HC of the NYJ” napkin note.

In the years since, Belichick won six Super Bowls with the Patriots and has made his dislike of Jets own Woody Johnson no secret, most recently calling him out in October after the team fired head coach Robert Saleh.

“That’s kinda what it’s been there with the Jets,” Belichick said on the “ManningCast” of “Monday Night Football.” “They’ve barely won over 30 percent in the last 10 years. The owner being the owner, just ready, fire, aim.”

This is a developing story
